Dr. Andrew W. Davisson

Who was Dr. Andrew W. Davisson?   Is he related to my Josiah Davisson?   One researcher says he was born November 11,1783.  According to a history book of Greene County,Ohio he came there in 1804/05;  another says 1806.   One family researcher, in a post on a genealogy site, says he was born in Clarksburg, Harrison County, West Virginia and had a brother, Dr. Joseph Davisson..  It's also thought he attended the Randolph Academy in Clarksburg, WVA.  His family is thought to come from Winchester, Virginia and then moved to Mason County, Kentucky.  I have no proof, myself, of any of this.

What I do know is this:  He married Rebecca Todd, the daughter of James and Jane (Buchanan) Todd in June of 1807 in Greene Co., Ohio by William McFarland, Justice of the Peace.  Rebecca was born March 2, 1790 near Nashville, Tennessee.  She was an older sister to my great, great, great-grandmother, Sarah (Todd) Davisson.  Andrew and Rebecca had the following children:

1.  Amanda Davisson, born 4-19-1808 in Lawrenceburg, Indiana;  married James P. Miller in 1829.  She died in 1897 in Washington, D.C.

2.  Eliza Jane Davisson, born 6-10-1810 in Ohio;  married Robert C. Hamill, born 1808 in Xenia, Ohio, on 11-14-1838 in Xenia.  She died in Chicago, Illinois on 2-25-1895.

3.  Mary Ann Davisson, born 12-1-1813 in Ohio;  married Thomas D. McCalla on 12-29-1841.

4.  Dr. Alfred W. Davisson, born 5-21-1816 (or 5-31-1815) in Xenia,Ohio;  Married Jennie (surname unknown).
He died in 1895 in Atlanta, Georgia.

5.  Clarendon Davisson, born 12-18-1818 (or 12-10-1817) in Ohio;  Married Mary Ann McIntire, daughter of John McIntire, on 7-22-1845 in Pike County, Indiana.  He practiced law in Petersburg, Pike Co., IN at the time a Dr. Joseph Davisson was a physician in Pike Co., IN.  Clarendon died 9-10-1878 at Brighton Island, Georgia.

6.  James Todd Davisson, born 1-1-1821 in Indiana;  He died about 1824 in Ohio.

Dr. Andrew W. Davisson died on 7-23-1822 at Madison, Indiana.  Rebecca returned to Xenia, Ohio and was listed  in the 1830 census of Greene County, Ohio.   The settlement of Andrew's estate was recorded on December 1,1829 in Greene Co., Ohio.   Josiah Davisson, my great, great, great-grandfather, and James M. Todd, Rebecca's brother,  were the administrators of his estate.  People who were paid from the final settlement mentioned in this record were James Collier, James Galloway, Jr., G. W. Stipp, J.B. Gardinier, Hugh Hamill, Alexander Turnbull, George Townsley, Moses Trader, J. Grover, A. Harlan, Esq.
Rebecca died in 1870 in Chicago, Illinois.  Their son, Dr. Alfred W. Davisson, went to Chicago in 1842.  He practiced medicine in Indiana and Chicago,Illinois; he was also a prosector of anatomy at a medical college.  He left medicine to start a bank with his brother-in-law, Thomas McCalla.
I want to know if and how Dr. Andrew W. Davisson is related to my Josiah Davisson, other than being his brother-in-law.

  1. Andrew Davisson was my great-great grandfather. My information comes from my family Bible.
RE: 1. Amanda and Rev. James P. Miller married 8/4/1829 in Xenia, Ohio. (I have a list of their children and their birthdates if you need that.)
    2. Elisa Jane (born 6/14/1810) and Robert Hamill married on 11/28/1838.
    3. Mary Ann (Marianne) married in Bloomington, Indiana.
    4. Dr. Alfred Williston Davisson born 5/31/1815 (and he is the one who made this entry in the Bible). His first wife was Julia Ann McClurg (b. 4/4/1811 d. 4/23/1849)- married 11/2/1841 in Westfield, NY. His second wife was Jennie Ennis, born 12/18/1837 in Clarendon, Orleans County, NY. They married on 3/26/1857 in Albany, NY. He had 2 daughters with his first wife, and 4 children with his 2nd wife, as well as raising a grandchild (Julian Davisson Couch) from one of his deceased daughters. He died 7/17/1895 in Atlanta but was buried in Graceland Cemetery, Chicago.
    5. Clarendon was Dr. Alfred W. Davisson's younger brother - born 12/10/1817 in Xenia. He died on Broughton Island, McIntash County, Ga. and was buried at Darien, Ga.
    6. James Todd Davisson born 1/21/1821 in Xenia, Ohio and died 10/12/1824 in Xenia.

Rebecca Davisson died 1/10/1870 at 631 Wabash Ave., Chicago and was buried at Graceland Cemetery.

Throughout the lists of births, marriages, and deaths, I found no mention of Josiah Davisson.

  2. I'm so sorry to be so late in thanking you for your comment and information. It's so nice to hear from someone who is related to Dr. Andrew and his family.
I have a book called "Homage to Amanda, Two Hundred Years of American Quilts" by Edwin Binney,3rd & Gail Binney-Winslow. You may already have this book too. It features Amanda Davisson's quilt made in 1826, Shelby Co.,KY. There is also a short biography and painting of her. I noticed it says that her father's ancestors had been in America since 1651. That's all it said about the Davissons. This date, 1651, is when Daniel Davison first came to America. He had a grandson, Josiah Davison, and it's said that Josiah added an extra "s" to his branch. They migrated from Mass. down to NJ and then on to VA, then to Harrison Co., WVA. I believe Dr. Andrew W. Davisson and my ggg-grandfather are from this large Davisson family. Your gg-grandfather was probably named after the older Andrew Davisson that first settled Harrison Co.,WVA about 1773/4.
Another book, "The Biographical Cyclopedia of American Women, Vol. II" has a biography of "Eliza Jane Davisson, daughter of Andrew Williams Davisson and Rebecca Todd..." I wonder if "Williams" is really his middle name? That might be a clue to the maiden name on his maternal side.
I appreciate your information! Every bit helps.

  3. Thanks, Billie. We've been trying to determine if Josiah is a direct link to Andrew. This info may help!

    1. Hi Diana - we corresponded about ten years ago. Do you still have the same e- address? Can we attach things here? How? Back in 2004 (about 5 years after I dropped out of family history) Was I ever able to e-mail you a copy of Rebecca's memoirs? Did you ever locate the original?.

  4. I am descended from Eliza Jane Davisson, who married Dr. Robert Hamill in 1838. I THINK it is the LDS have Sarah (Sally) Todd marrying Joseph Davisson. I assumed that meant Dr. Andrew Davisson's older brother Joseph, who was also a doctor. (His nephew, Dr. Alfred Williston Davisson (who founded precurser to Rush Hospital in Chicago?) apprenticed with him as a teenager). Somehow this didn't seem possible because Sally's older sister, Rebecca Todd, wrote in her memoirs that Joseph Davisson was an "invererate old bachelor" when he was about 50 and Sally was about 30. Rebecca says, “In 1849, Julia Davisson died, leaving two helpless children. I went with Clare’s wife, to Petersburg [Indiana?] to see our friends and sister, Sally, and family.” but there is never any mention of who Sally married and no mention of Josiah or who he was.

  5. Rebecca says Clare Davisson was born Dec. 18th. Thomas McCalla's nephew (and son of Dr. Robert Hamill's 3rd cousin) has a manuscript in the Newberry with a photo of Clare, saying he was US Consul to Bordeaux, France after the Civil War.

  6. Rebecca says "In 1854 came the sudden death of the Rev. J. P. Millar."

  7. Judy, I am very happy to hear from you. I remember reading some posts of yours written in 1999 about Dr. Andrew and Dr. Joseph. I wished at the time that I could exchange info with you.
Yes, some do say Sarah Todd married Joseph but actually she married Josiah. About Dr. Alfred---if he apprenticed with Dr. Joseph, it would had to be about 1834. Dr. Joseph was in Pike Co. IN & was practicing as a doctor then. I tried to find out where Dr. Joseph was around 1816, when Alfred was born. I did find some references that show Joseph was in the Kentucky Militia by May 1813. He also served as a Surgeon's Mate at Lake Erie that year. In 1817 he bought land in Gibson Co. IN along with his bro., Elijah H. Davisson according to the land records. This, I believe, was his first purchase. He was a batchelor at age 50 alright. He married Eliz. Wease at age 64.
Josiah Davisson died about 1847-1850. He & Sarah came to Gibson Co. around 1840. In 1850 Sarah was living next door her daughter, Mary Paul in Patoka Twp.---south of where she & Josiah was. I think they used to live on or near Dr. Joseph's land because of who their neighbors were.
I really appreciate you sharing what Rebecca wrote. Her memoirs must be fascinating for you. Strange she never mentioned Josiah. Wish she had. Yet Josiah and her brother, James Todd, were the administrators of Dr. Andrew's estate in 1829. Hugh Hamill is listed as receiving money from the credit of the estate. I have other records to show that Sarah married Josiah, not Joseph.
I have that Clarendon "Clare" was born Dec. 18, 1817/18 Ohio. For 2 yrs. he practiced law at Petersburg. He and Dr. Joseph are listed in the same City Directory on the same page.
You said in one of your old posts that Andrew & Joseph went to Randolph Academy in Clarksburg WVA. Very interesting. May I ask where you found that? I'll be glad to share anything I have that you might want. I'm sure you have plenty that I don't have.

    1. Billie - Were you involved in the Genforum e-mails about that time (1999-2000)? There a number of references to Josiah Davissons, and some tantalizing similar locations, but I could never make the connection.

    2. Rebecca has quite a lot to say about Dr. Joseph Davisson, with some quite mixed feelings. I am not quite sure how to share this with you. Can we attach things here? How? Back in 2004 (about 5 years after I dropped out of family history) I did try to send Rebecca's document to Diana Haney. She may have an original copy. I will reply to here with this post.

    3. Finally, there is the Mary Kelly (Amanda Davisson Millar's daughter) document which calls her grandfather's, Dr. Andrew's Davisson's, brother, "Josiah". It is horst, so I will try to copy & paste:
My mother, whose maiden name was AMANDA DAVISSON, and who was her parent’s oldest child, has often told me that her father’s people lived in WINCHESTER, Va., where they had

My grandfather’s name was ANDREW WILLIAMS DAVISSON. I believe WILLIAMS was the name of his mother’s family.

My great-grandfather went from WINCHESTER to CLARKSBURG, then old Virginia northwest Virginia, of which town he was one of the incorporators.

My uncle, CLARENDON DAVISSSON, soon after the Civil War went to CLARKSBURG to look up something about his father’s family. There he saw my great-grandfather’s name inscribed on some town records as ANDREW DAVISSON, gentleman. It was customary at that time for the status or con¬dition of a man to be mentioned.

My grandfather, ANDREW DAVISSON, and his brother, JOSIAH DAVISSON, went, as very young men, from Virginia to PHILADELPHIA to study medicine. It was probably in the late 1700s. PHILADELPHIA was then the best place in the country to study medicine—much better than New York. They studied under the famous Dr. Physick who enjoyed the highest reputation as a physician. My mother said she had often heard her father speak of Dr. Physick.

After securing his Degree, my grandfather went to Kentucky, then a more frontier country than Virginia, to begin his practice of medicine. John Paul, whom he met there, had just laid out the town of Xenia, Ohio, and was looking for a physician for his own town. He persuaded my grandfather to go with him and, settle there. He and my grandmother REBECCA TODD were married in 1807. She was seventeen years old at that time. He saw her first at a camp meeting and was attracted by her looks. She was said to have a wonderful complexion, and pretty auburn hair. They were neither of them Methodists, but she and all her people were Presby¬terians of the straightest sect. She was intensely religious and persuaded her young husband, to become a Presbyterian too— my mother said he had brought from Virginia, an English prayerbook so I infer his affiliations were the Church of England.

In Corwith Hamill’s - of Wayne, IL- handwriting:
      * Written Feb. 26, 1923 to Ernest A. Hamill by his cousin Mary Kelley of Washington, DC, wife of ex-senator Jas. Kelley [can’t read]. Amanda was oldest child of Rebecca Todd and Andrew Williams Davisson [cant read] in Lawrenceburg, Indiana [can’t read….]

  9. All of this information is very fascinating to me and helps to build the picture of these Davisson's lives. Mary Kelly must have meant that her grandfather's (Dr. Andrew's) brother was Joseph, not Josiah. Josiah was born in 1798...too young to study medicine with Andrew. According other researcher's writing, I can believe they did live in Winchester before moving to Harrison Co., WVA. The older Davisson brothers, Obediah, Daniel, Andrew, Amaziah, James & Ananias (sons of the older Josiah Davisson b. 1692) who left New Jersey are said to have passed through Philadelphia before moving on to Virginia. Andrew, Amaziah and Obediah left the Shenandoah Valley and moved on to the area of Clarksburg, WVA. Andrew moved to Kentucky along with two sons & other relatives. I remember the name "John Paul" in my research about Xenia, Ohio. He founded Xenia in 1803. Then he helped establish Madison, Indiana in Jefferson Co., 1809. Dr. Andrew died in Madison, Indiana, 1822.
